Solutions to Manage ADHD Meltdowns

The physicians at Woodburn Pediatrics understand that ADHD meltdowns are nerve-racking for the entire family. Since meltdowns can appear happenstance, they are difficult to control and prevent. However, these three strategies can help you to detect patterns and manage episodes more effectively with our three strategies.

Lookout for Triggers

From loud noises to not getting a desired item or activity, virtually anything can trigger a meltdown. That’s why it is important to track what happens before your child begins to display behavioral problems. By keeping a close eye on potential triggers, you can prevent ADHD meltdowns from happening in the first place.

Use Coping Strategies

Emotional coping strategies play a crucial role in ADHD treatment for children. Alternative behaviors such as punching a pillow or listening to music can be introduced as soon as your child begins to display meltdown behavior.

To make this strategy more effective, model the coping skill for your child with their full attention and then ask him or her to join in. It is critical to maintain a positive and enthusiastic voice during this time to show your child that it is preferred over the negative behaviors.

Redirect the Behavior

Redirection involves distracting a child right before or during the beginning of the onset of a meltdown with an alternative task. This strategy can prevent your child from fixating on negative thoughts and allowing their emotions to take over.

As soon as you notice your child going into meltdown mode, immediately offer him or her an alternative activity such as drawing, playing with bubbles or another task that requires their full attention. Provide plenty of praise as soon as he or she begins the activity to reinforce it as an appropriate alternative.

Dealing with meltdowns is challenging, but is also far from impossible with the right strategies. Contact us today for further help handling ADHD symptoms or to learn more about ADHD treatment options.
